A clear, practical answer
Leaving a Car Parked for Weeks: How to Prepare It
A healthy car left for two or three weeks is usually fine. Beyond that the battery runs down, tyres flat-spot and a handbrake left on can stick. Protect the battery, pump the tyres up, leave the car in gear on level ground, and avoid a spot where a temporary restriction could appear while you are away.

Bu rehberi Türkçe okuThe battery
With the car switched off, the alarm, clock and control units still draw a small current. A healthy battery carries that for three or four weeks; an old one may fail to start the car after two.
For more than a month there are three options: a charger with a maintenance mode, disconnecting the negative terminal, or asking someone to drive the car for at least half an hour every two weeks. Five minutes of idling does not recharge it.
Tyres and brakes
Tyres resting on one spot for weeks develop flat spots, felt as vibration for the first few miles. Inflating to the upper pressure the manufacturer allows reduces it.
A handbrake left on for a long time can stick. On level ground it is safer to leave the car in gear or in Park with the handbrake off, using chocks if needed. On a slope, keep the handbrake on.
Fuel, cleaning and covers
Leave the tank full; an empty one collects condensation. Wash the car: bird droppings and tree sap mark the paint within weeks.
If you use a cover, choose a breathable fabric. A plastic sheet traps moisture and scratches the paint.
Choosing where to leave it
An indoor car park is the safest choice. On the street, pick somewhere with no restriction, no market day and little chance of temporary signs for roadworks or an event. A restriction that appears later is the most common reason a long-parked car gets towed.
Avoid trees, building sites and tight corners. Leave a spare key with someone you trust and tell them where the car is.
Check that inspection and insurance will not expire while you are away.
Staying reachable while you are away
When your car is blocking an exit, has a broken window or is about to be towed, nobody who wants to tell you has your number. Writing it on the glass leaves it on the street for weeks.
A QR code on the glass does the job: whoever sees the car sends a prepared alert, the notification reaches your phone in whatever city you are, and you can call the person holding the key.
Want to be reachable without writing your number on the car? Create your free vehicle QR code; it takes two minutes.
Step by step
- 1
Protect the battery
For more than a month, connect a maintenance charger or disconnect the negative terminal.
- 2
Inflate the tyres
Go to the upper pressure the manufacturer allows.
- 3
Leave it in gear on level ground
Keep the handbrake off and use chocks if needed.
- 4
Pick the spot carefully
Avoid streets likely to get temporary restrictions, and leave a key with someone.
- 5
Stay reachable
Leave a QR code on the glass, not a phone number, so alerts reach your phone.
Frequently asked questions
How long can a car sit without being driven?
A car with a healthy battery is fine for two or three weeks. Beyond a month the battery needs protecting.
Should I disconnect the battery?
Not for less than a month. For longer, disconnecting the negative terminal or using a maintenance charger protects it.
Can a car be towed just for being parked a long time?
Where parking is allowed, time alone is not usually a reason. Temporary restrictions put up later, and a car that looks abandoned, are.
Is starting the car once a week enough?
Idling is not enough. The car needs at least half an hour on the road for the battery to recharge.
