A clear, practical answer
Valet Parking: Who Is Responsible for Your Car?
From handover until you get the keys back, the business offering the valet service and the valet company are responsible for the car. Take a ticket, photograph the mileage and any existing damage, and leave nothing valuable inside. Report damage or a missing item when you collect the car, before you leave.

Bu rehberi Türkçe okuWho is responsible
Where a restaurant, hotel or shopping centre offers valet parking in its own name, it stays responsible to the customer even if another company does the work. Courts commonly hold the venue and the valet company liable together.
A free valet changes nothing: handing over the key creates a duty to look after the car. A no-liability line on the back of the ticket does not remove that duty by itself.
At handover
Take a ticket showing the company name, date and time. Without one, the burden of proof is yours.
Photograph all four sides, the wheels and the dashboard. Mileage and fuel level show later whether the car was used without permission.
Leave no valuables, documents or house keys in the car. Hand over the car key only, with nothing on the ring that shows your address.
Ask where the car will be parked. Valets do sometimes leave cars on the street or in a restricted spot.
Damage, tickets and missing items
Damage: walk round the car when you collect it. Show any new damage to the supervisor before you leave, ask for a written report and photograph it. Write to the venue the same day.
Tickets: a penalty incurred while the valet had the car is sent to the registered keeper. The valet ticket's date and time show the car was not in your hands, and you can claim the amount from the venue.
Towing: if the valet left the car in a restricted place and it was towed, the tow and storage fees can be claimed from the venue.
Insurance: if your insurer pays for the repair, it pursues whoever is responsible. Whether theft or unauthorised use by a valet is covered depends on the policy.
If the venue refuses
Write to the venue with the ticket, photos, report and repair invoice. After a refusal, the route is a consumer complaints body or a small claims court, depending on the amount.
Reachable while the valet has the car
A valet usually leaves your car somewhere you never see. If it is blocking an exit or has its lights on, the person who notices can find neither you nor the valet.
A QR code on the glass sends the alert straight to you, and you tell the valet without leaving the table. For valet and car park operators, the Business & Fleet plan can route alerts to the team on duty as well.
Want to be reachable without writing your number on the car? Create your free vehicle QR code; it takes two minutes.

Frequently asked questions
Who pays if a valet damages my car?
The business offering the valet service and the valet company. Reporting it at collection and getting a written report makes it easier to prove.
Who pays a ticket the valet got?
The notice goes to the registered keeper, but the valet ticket shows the venue had the car at that time and you can claim the amount back.
What if something left in the car goes missing?
It is hard to prove, which is why leaving nothing valuable is the only reliable protection. Report a loss before you leave and follow up in writing.
Do I need a valet ticket?
It is the only record of who took the car and when. Do not hand the car over without one.
